Choosing your own stand up paddleboard can be tricky if you don't know what you are looking for. Here are some helpful hints to get you on the right path.
1. What type of board
All around SUP
-Perfect for first timers
-Most common shape
-Friendly to all sizes and even dogs
-Can be used in all water conditions
-Can be used for fishing or yoga
-very maenuverable in surf
-shaped like a big surf board
-Designed for long distances in flat water
-Perfect for serious paddlers wanting endurance workouts
-Still stable enough for beginners
-Max glide and efficiency
-Extra long for speed and glide efficiency
-lightweight, mostly carbon fiber
-Perfect for elite and recreational racers
2. What size of board
Each board will have a weight limit to it. For the most stability you want to make sure you are inside that weight limit. If you are a beginner you are going to be wanting a wider board.
3. Epoxy or Inflatable
This depends on how you are able to transfer your board to where you are going. The most glide and efficiency you are going to get from your epoxy boards but if you travel a lot or your favorite place to SUP doesn't have a close parking area you will want an inflatable board which comes in a backpack form which you can carry. Also, if you ever get into Whitewater SUP racing you will also want an inflatable Race SUP instead of epoxy because the rocks in drops will break your board.
4. Price range
This is a wide range. You might find some boards as cheap as $500 or as expensive as $5,000 if you go custom carbon fiber. I don't recommend starting out with the most expensive board a company makes. However I do recommend certain companies over others. My absolute favorite brand of board is 404. They offer everything from a beginner all around board to the top of the line carbon fiber board. My other choice that will get you a little bit of a cheaper option would be SUP ATX. They also carry a wide range of boards for every type of individual. Remember, you get what you pay for!!
